Endymion
for solo flute

(2019)

Duration ca. 6 minutes

Written for Jenny Hu and premiered at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on 2 December 2019 as part of the COMA Spring Series.

This piece was inspired by an episode in ancient Greek mythology. The story goes that one night, the beautiful shepherd, Endymion, fell asleep in his pastures and was spotted by Selene, goddess of the moon. Selene was so struck by the beauty of the sleeping mortal that she froze him in place in the hope of capturing his perfection for all eternity. The work uses the pastoral tones of the flute and contrasts between modality and atonality to express this intriguing story through music.
